Apex sells satellite for Japanese technology demonstration mission
Satellite manufacturer Apex Technology has sold a spacecraft bus to a Japanese customer for a technology demonstration mission set for launch in 2027, the company and industry sources reported on March 19, 2026. Under the contract, Apex’s modular Aries satellite bus will serve as the foundation for a small satellite that will carry Japanese‑built payloads designed to verify advanced space technologies in Earth orbit. The agreement marks Apex’s first dedicated spacecraft contract with a Japanese partner and represents the company’s entry into the Japanese space market.
The satellite bus sold by Apex will be integrated with technology demonstration hardware developed by NEC Corporation, a major Japanese electronics and space systems firm, under a broader effort to test capabilities for next‑generation optical communications, high‑speed routing and millimeter‑wave band communications in orbit. Apex’s Aries platform is a compact, productized bus designed for rapid configuration and deployment across missions requiring responsive spacecraft solutions. The Japanese technology demonstrator is scheduled to launch in fiscal year 2027 and will provide on‑orbit verification of the combined payload and bus performance.
The sale underscores growing international collaboration in satellite manufacturing and technology demonstration missions, as Japanese industry advances optical and communications capabilities while U.S. smallsat builders like Apex expand their global footprint. By providing a standardized spacecraft bus to NEC, Apex is enabling faster integration and testing of innovative payloads, helping address rising demand for in‑space verification of communications and network technologies that could underpin future satellite constellations and space infrastructure.
