Christine Klein takes up duty as acting Director of Controlling, Finance and Operational Procurement
Christine Klein assumed the role of acting Director of Controlling, Finance and Operational Procurement (D/CFO) at the European Space Agency on 1 April 2026, taking charge of a newly created directorate intended to reinforce ESA’s financial governance and procurement efficiency. The appointment coincides with the agency’s plan to make the directorate fully operational by 1 June, aligning the unit’s launch with ESA’s broader restructuring agenda approved at the most recent Ministerial Council.
The directorate will oversee the €22.3 billion of programme commitments ratified by ESA ministers in Bremen in November 2025, providing integrated financial planning, budget monitoring, procurement management and industrial‑policy support across all ESA programmes. As a central controlling hub, it will supply directorates with data‑driven decision tools, enforce transparency and accountability, and optimise resource allocation for missions ranging from Earth observation to deep‑space exploration. Klein brings German‑nation experience, having begun her career on International Space Station commercialisation projects, then managing Germany’s ESA contribution finances at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) from 2012, and chairing ESA’s Administrative and Finance Committee between 2017 and 2020 where she helped reform the agency’s financial regulations. Since joining ESA in 2020, she has held senior positions in workforce management and industrial policy, broadening her cross‑functional expertise.
Klein’s appointment forms part of a phased transformation that introduces new directorates and reshapes senior leadership to keep ESA competitive in a rapidly evolving space sector. The reorganisation, endorsed at the November 2025 Ministerial Council, aims to increase agility in programme execution and strengthen ESA’s capacity to manage large‑scale, multi‑partner projects. Additional senior‑management announcements are scheduled for June, indicating further alignment of ESA’s organisational structure with its expanding portfolio of lunar, Mars and satellite initiatives.
