Mission Overview
The Soyuz 2.1b/Fregat-M launch vehicle, provided by the Russian Federal Space Agency (ROSCOSMOS), is set to launch the Luna 27 mission from the Vostochny Cosmodrome, Siberia, Russian Federation, on December 31, 2028, at 12:00 AM UTC. The Russian Federal Space Agency (ROSCOSMOS) will deliver the payload into Lunar Orbit. The Soyuz 2.1b/Fregat-M launch vehicle will carry the Luna 27 payload, which is designed to send a lander to the South Pole-Aitken basin on the far side of the Moon. ROSCOSMOS is responsible for the mission.
Carrying a payload operated by ROSCOSMOS, the Luna 27 mission will feature 15 science instruments, including a sampling drill, to analyze the regolith, plasma in the exosphere, dust, and seismic activity. The payload is designed to prospect for minerals, volatiles, and lunar water ice in permanently shadowed areas of the Moon, and to investigate the potential use of these natural lunar resources. The Soyuz 2.1b/Fregat-M launch vehicle, provided by ROSCOSMOS, will deliver the payload into Lunar Orbit, supporting long-term plans for scientific and commercial activities, including the potential establishment of a crewed base on the Moon's far side.
