NASA’s Environment and Energy “Blue Marble” Awards Categories

NASA announced on 27 March 2026 a new set of recognitions under its Environment and Energy “Blue Marble” Awards, a program administered by the agency’s Environmental Management Division. The awards, unveiled by NASA’s Office of Strategic Infrastructure, identify exemplary work across the organization that advances environmental stewardship while supporting the agency’s core mission. The announcement outlines five distinct categories, each designed to highlight specific achievements in resource management, operational efficiency, and leadership.

Category I, the NASA Environmental Quality Award, honors projects that demonstrate superior environmental management and planning, including compliance, conservation, remediation, communication, and the development of stakeholder partnerships. Category II, the NASA Award for Excellence in Project or Program Execution, focuses on initiatives that reduce cost, schedule, or effort while maintaining compliance, emphasizing operational efficiency, innovation, and sustained performance. Category III, the NASA Excellence in Energy and Water Management Award, recognizes measurable improvements in energy efficiency, water conservation, and renewable‑energy integration across NASA facilities. Category IV, the NASA Excellence in Site Remediation Award, celebrates innovative remediation technologies, stakeholder engagement, exposure‑risk reduction, beneficial reuse, and accelerated cleanup efforts. Category V, the NASA Environmental Management Division Director’s Environment and Energy Award, is reserved for individuals or teams that exhibit outstanding vision and commitment to environmentally responsible mission success.

The Blue Marble Awards reinforce NASA’s broader commitment to integrating sustainability into its aerospace programs, linking environmental performance with mission readiness. By formalizing recognition of best practices in areas such as site remediation and resource efficiency, the awards aim to drive continuous improvement across the agency’s infrastructure and operational footprint. The program aligns with NASA’s strategic objectives outlined by the Environmental Management Division and the Office of Strategic Infrastructure, and it complements ongoing initiatives highlighted in recent NASA communications, including Artemis II launch preparations and network‑extension projects. These recognitions position NASA to maintain compliance with federal environmental regulations while fostering innovation that can be leveraged across future space exploration and Earth‑science endeavors.
