Sendoff for Artemis II Crew

NASA conducted a formal sendoff for the Artemis II crew on March 27 2026 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The departing team comprised NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch together with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Backup astronauts Andre Douglas (NASA) and Jenni Gibbons (CSA) stood beside the primary crew during the media appearance, and the NASA release dated March 30 2026 accompanied the photograph and outlined the mission objectives.

Artemis II will launch from Kennedy Space Center and carry the four astronauts on an approximately ten‑day circumlunar trajectory that loops around the Moon before returning to Earth. The mission represents the first crewed flight of the Orion spacecraft, providing the inaugural in‑flight verification of Orion’s life‑support, environmental control and consumables management systems with humans aboard. NASA and CSA will jointly operate the flight, with the Canadian astronaut serving as a mission specialist on the Orion crew. The crew’s itinerary includes a translunar injection burn, a lunar flyby at a distance of roughly 60 kilometers, and a deep‑space re‑entry sequence designed to validate heat‑shield performance.

As the initial crewed flight of the Artemis program, Artemis II establishes operational experience for subsequent missions that aim to land astronauts on the lunar surface and eventually support deep‑space exploration. Successful validation of Orion’s habitability and the integrated NASA‑CSA crew coordination will inform the development timeline for Artemis III and later lunar surface expeditions. The partnership demonstrated in this launch underscores the growing role of international collaborators in United States lunar exploration initiatives. The sendoff was documented by NASA photographer Josh Valcarcel, whose image captures the assembled crew and backup members before they proceeded to the scheduled media briefing.
