NASA Data Hackathon Inspires Community Action

In late January at the University of Florida’s Marston Science Library, students, community members, library staff, and researchers convened for the Environmental Monitoring through Education, Research, and Geospatial Engagement NASA Data Hackathon focused on leveraging environmental datasets for community‑relevant insights. The event, held January 31, 2026, centered on using NASA’s Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Observer application and real NASA datasets on land cover, clouds, and mosquito habitats to produce tools that support public health and environmental decision making. Participants engaged in full‑day workshops and sprint sessions that emphasized transforming raw measurements into visual maps, dashboards, and communication materials that tie local observations to broader scientific research.

Teams worked directly with volunteer‑collected environmental data under the guidance of NASA‑affiliated mentors and data science facilitators, gaining practical experience in data processing, visualization, and application development using digital resources curated by the Geospatial Digital Informatics Lab at UF. The hackathon structure enabled cross‑disciplinary collaboration among novice and advanced data handlers, producing community‑useful products and insights while demonstrating how NASA’s open data platforms can be applied to real‑world public health and environmental challenges. Support for the event came from NASA, UF Libraries, SciStarter — a global participatory science database — and Florida Community Innovation, highlighting the growing integration of NASA data into civic technology and outreach.

By actively involving local participants in hands‑on data transformation and insight development, the EMERGE NASA Data Hackathon showcased the potential for open science and citizen engagement to produce practical environmental and health information that extends beyond academic research into actionable community resources.
